In order for search engines to make themselves as user friendly as possible (they are business too, after all), they are constantly updating their search algorithms. Personally posting backlinks on loads of low quality sites is no longer going to help you get your website ranked highly anymore.

Not only do links need to be organically gained in order to effectively help a site to rank highly in a search engines page results, but certain links will carry more weight than others. Here is a visual summary of what to look for when it comes to a high quality link. In general, the most valuable mentions are the ones that are the most difficult to come by. As a result, links gained organically out of genuine interest or relevance (such as those gained in Digital PR) play a crucial role in improving your websites visibility online.
